Have A "Plan B" In Case Your Property Is Stolen Or You Experience Other Disasters!

Did you know that there are approximately 5 Million burglaries each and every year throughout the United States resulting in over 4 Billion dollars in losses? As of 2009, 87% of these burglaries remain unsolved.

While there are numerous steps you can take to reduce your chances of being a burglary victim, you should “Have A Plan B” just in case criminals do make off with your property.

First, make sure you mark your valuables so that you can easily identify them if they are recovered by law enforcement. You’d be totally amazed at the amount of property that police do eventually recover but, often the property never gets returned to the rightful owner because there is no way to determine who owns the property.

There are special engraving tools that can be used to mark your property and many times these tools are available for loan from your local police agency. I recommend discreetly marking your personal property using what is known as an Invisible Ink I.D. Pen with UV Light like the ones available from my private firm, Security Intelligence Bureau at: http://bit.ly/PropertyIDPen.

It’s also very important to make a complete inventory of the property within your residence and even your business or workplace. This inventory should include photographs, receipts and even video so that you have a full record of your items not only in case of a burglary or other crime but also other incidents such as fire, severe weather and flood damage where you’ll need to provide certain details about your property to your insurance carrier for any claims. Of course, you’ll want to store your inventory record in a safe place somewhere outside of your home or business location.

Can Police & Fire Rescue Personnel Get To Your EXACT Location In Case Of An Emergency?

In case of any emergency at home or work, it's a good idea to make sure that your residential and workplace telephone numbers as well as your physical addresses for these locations actually shows up in the dispatch records system of your local Emergency Communications Center (EOC).

Unfortunately many times home and even business telephone numbers and physical addresses may not be up-to-date in the emergency communications dispatch center computer system and when seconds really count, knowing exactly where you are calling from can help police and fire first responders get to you as quickly as possible.

Another reason for making sure your exact physical address actually shows up in the communications center computer system is so that in the event you are dealing with say, an intruder, a fire or medical emergency in your home or workplace, merely dialing "9-1-1" and not providing any verbal communication will most likely result in the authorities being dispatched to your location anyway to investigate what is commonly referred to as an “Investigate The Unknown Trouble” call where police officers will actually show-up just to make sure everything is okay.

As a police officer, I get dispatched to these types of calls on a regular basis and it is better to have the police respond and make sure everything is okay than not taking any action at all. Also keep in mind if you live or work in a building with lots of tenants, this could pose an additional problem for first responders because even when they arrive at your building's address, they still need to ascertain exactly which residential unit or business suite is involved and then determine how they will approach that location based on the nature of the call.

In order to make sure that your home and/or business telephone number along with your exact physical address actually shows up in your local Emergency Communications Center system, simply call the non-emergency phone number for your EOC and let them know that you want to test your residential or workplace telephone number to make sure it shows up in their emergency communications system in case of any emergency. They'll be able to instruct you regarding their exact procedures for conducting the test. Keep in mind, that this strategy only applies to actual landline telephones, NOT cellular phones.

Robinson, Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs, joined representatives from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and Facebook to announce a brand new partnership to enable 140 million Facebook users across America to receive AMBER Alerts via their Facebook accounts.

     The nationwide AMBER Alert program works to mobilize local communities to search for and rescue abducted children. In serious child abduction cases, law enforcement officials issue bulletins that are then distributed by media and broadcast outlets, the trucking industry, the wireless industry, and Internet service providers to a targeted audience. The AMBER Alert program has been credited with recovering 525 children since it's inception.

     Robinson remarked, "These efforts demonstrate the high priority this Administration places on child protection. While we can't fulfill every parent's dream and completely insulate children, we can promote programs and partnerships that protect children and help bring them home."

Home Healthcare Aide Physically Abusing 91-Year Old Woman Caught On Video Surveillance Tape!

CNN recently aired a very disturbing report about a 91-year old elderly woman who was being physically abused by a home healthcare aide who has been working with the victim for the past 11 years!

I bring this to your attention because the abuse over a 30-day period was caught on a web camera that the victim's family set-up to watch over their mom.

Just Because Security Officials Are Nearby, Doesn't Mean They'll Intervene In Dangerous Situations To Help Keep You Safe!

     A lot of people make the very false assumption that they don't have to be overly concerned about their personal security or safety because if an altercation or other incident occurs, other people nearby will automatically get involved to diffuse the situtation or they can just summon private security personnel or law enforcement officers to the scene to handle the crisis.

     Unfortunately, this isn't always the case! Recently a teenage girl was savagely beaten by another teenage girl in broad daylight at a bus terminal area in the State of Washington while several uniformed private security officers assigned to the bus terminal area stood by and watched the beating in progress but did not intervene because their "working orders" required them to simply "Observe And Report" what was happening and stand-by for law enforcement officers to arrive on the scene to take police action.

Arlington County, VA Police Department Is Holding A Special Event To Deter Auto Theft

Free Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Etching Offered To Vehicle Owners

ARLINGTON, VA. – The Arlington County Police Department is inviting citizens to a FREE Auto Theft Deterrence event on Saturday, November 7th, 2009. At the event, car owners can have their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) etched into their exterior windows. Motorcycle owners will be provided with a custom set of micro decals that contain their VIN and instructions on how to apply them by trained experts. It’s a quick, simple process that can reduce the chances of theft, or in the event of a theft, increase the likelihood the vehicle will be recovered quickly.

VIN etching does not affect the appearance of the vehicle or motorcycle. Trained etchers chemically engrave the VIN onto the main windows of the vehicle in inconspicuous locations. Some insurance companies offer discounts to the owners of VIN-etched vehicles.

A VIN-etched vehicle is harder to conceal when stolen, thus making it less attractive to car thieves. VIN etching also virtually eliminates any potential profit professional thieves might get from selling windows, windshields, and motorcycle parts through chop shops.

This event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Arlington County, VA Fire Station #1, located at 500 S. Glebe Road, Arlington, VA 22204. It is being provided FREE of charge by the Arlington County Police Department and the Virginia State Police HEAT (Help Eliminate Auto Theft) Program.

The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) has announced that the "26th Annual National Night Out" (NNO) program will culminate on Tuesday evening, August 4, 2009.

National Night Out, a year-long community building campaign, is designed to: (1) Heighten crime prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a clear message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and actively fighting back against crime.

Along with traditional outside lights and front porch vigils, most cities and towns now celebrate National Night Out with a variety of special citywide and neighborhood events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, festivals, visits from local law enforcement officers, safety fairs and even special events and activities just for kids and young adults.

Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department Offers "Operation TIPP" Program

The Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has a special community outreach program called, Operation TIPP (Terrorist Incident Prevention Program) which is designed to help detect and prevent terrorism incidents in the nation's capital.

The fact is, preventing terrorism is really everybody's business and often times it will be an individual, business or service organization that will be the first to notice activity that might appear suspicious or out of the ordinary. When this happens, it is very important that these suspicions be immediately shared with law enforcement so that the situation can be examined, evaluated and if necessary, be acted upon.

Operation TIPP has two main components: 1) Educating citizens and businesses within very specific industries on what to look out for in the way of suspicious activity related to their industry; and 2) Providing easy and convenient ways--including a confidential toll-free number (1-877-YOU-WATCH) to report suspicious activity to police.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) Goes Into Full Effect On June 1, 2009!

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) that requires U.S. and Canadian travelers to present a passport or other accepted document that denotes identity and citizenship when entering the United States is adding Land and Sea requirements beginning on June 1, 2009. The program is a result of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 (IRTPA).

The U.S. WHTI program for air travelers actually went into effect way back on January 23, 2007. Now beginning on June 1, 2009, if you're a U.S. or Canadian traveler, you'll need the proper documentation for land and sea travel entry into America as well.

Sadly, today, April 20, 2009 marks the 10-year anniversary of the deadly shooting rampage at Columbine High School in the suburbs of Denver, CO.

On April 20, 1999, two high school seniors at the school went on a planned violent and deadly shooting rampage that claimed the lives of 12 students, 1 teacher and injured 23 other people before both suspects committed suicide.

Here's a quick life safety tip that could just save your life or the life of a loved one, a close friend or even a complete stranger.

As you know, for many areas of the United States, Sunday, March 8, 2009 is the day that we all move our clocks forward 1 hour for Daylight Savings Time.

This is a great time to take just a few minutes to inspect all of your home’s smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and REPLACE each unit’s batteries with FRESH batteries.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA see: http://www.nfpa.org/), an estimated 890 lives could be saved each year if all homes had working smoke detectors in America. Sadly, 65% of reported home fire deaths in the United States between 2000-2004 resulted from fires in homes with no smoke detectors or no working smoke alarms. THE SOAR FEAR OF FLYING PROGRAM OF CAPT. TOM BUNN

The fear of flying is not something that is easily understood or controlled, especially by those who feel the effects every time they go to the airport. Many passengers feel that the only way to deal with the problem is to either avoid flying as much as possible, or to deal with it alone. Both options have serious drawbacks, and make it difficult for the person experiencing the anxiety to enjoy the benefits of air travel or to experience a trip without experiencing stress.

Many people who have trouble with flying have tried "everything" on their own, tried therapy, tried medication, or even tried one or more fear of flying programs. They still have hope but they are very doubtful that anything will work. That doubt may be erased with a better approach. One of the approaches that I think works well is the SOAR program from airline captain and licensed therapist Tom Bunn. He has been directly involved with understanding and treating flying related anxieties since 1980 when he became part of the first fear of flying at a major U.S. airline. Two years later in 1982, Captain Bunn founded SOAR to help passengers overcome their fear of flying by helping them to understand their anxieties, and more importantly how to overcome them.

During his career, he has helped over 5,000 overcome difficulty with flying. When he was first involved in his airline's fear of flying program, he was disturbed to see that substantial numbers of participants who successfully completed the course, and even their "graduation flights," were still very anxious about flying. This inspired him to improve these kinds of fear of flying programs by including innovative concepts from behavioral psychology into the course. This innovation finally came to fruition after he founded SOAR in 1980, and continues up to today.

His improvements has come through hard work and years of research. Unlike many of the fearful flying programs that are now available, Captain Bunn's program is based on scientific analysis and research, by Captain Bunn and others. Starting with studies by the University of Tennessee in the 1980s as well as his own academic work. In order to offer the most effective help possible, he completed graduate school to become a therapist. He spent five additional years in training at psychological institutes, finally developing a therapy that has made it possible for everyone to fly. Captain Bunn has also refined how he works with fearful flyers, allowing anxious passengers to tailor their therapy to their needs.

Captain Bunn doesn't do all of this alone. One of his organization's key people is Lisa Hauptner, the vice president and director of SOAR. After taking the course 15 years ago, she earned a masters degree in counseling, eventually becoming a licensed therapist and certified addictions counselor who practices group and individual psychotherapy in Westchester County, New York, and who is also an adjunct psychology professor at Pace University.

Lisa began working with SOAR in 1992. She is a former fearful flier who prior to her work with SOAR had a career as an investment consultant that demanded lots of air travel. She felt so strongly about her own successful results with the program on her previous career's travel requirements that she teamed up with Captain Bunn to run SOAR. As a former SOAR customer, she understand both sides of the story--the person who is terrified of flying and the person who knows that SOAR works.

Creating A Home Inventory Checklist BEFORE Disaster Strikes Could Be Pricless!

Recently, Ms. Avery Tynes a veteran Insurance Agent with American Family Insurance in Tuscon, Arizona wrote a very timely article on the importance of making sure you have a complete, update-to-date Home Inventory Checklist of all your valuable items for insurance purposes. Her article appears below...

If a catastrophic event damages or destroys your home, would it be made worse by you not knowing what all you lost? Though memories cannot be replaced, the contents of your home can be if you have homeowners or renters insurance. One of the easiest ways to make sure you get all of your things back is to create a home inventory. This will simplify the claims process and ensure that your settlement amount is appropriate.

Creating the inventory can be tedious, but it can also be as simple as walking around your home with a video camera. Be sure to note the quantities, serial numbers, make, model, and purchase price and date. Supplementing the inventory with photographs is also helpful. You can get a personal inventory chart from your insurance agent.

Add up the value of the contents of your home and store the video and any supporting information in a fireproof container or move the information to a different location, such as a safety deposit box. It is also helpful to store contact information for your insurance agent with your home inventory. Make sure you have enough insurance coverage for your personal belongings.

Here are 5 things you can do if your property is damaged:

1) Report the claim to your insurance agent as soon as possible. Some insurance companies also have a 24-hour phone number that you can use to report a claim.

2) Report the incident to the police, if the claim involves a theft.

3) Prepare a list of the damaged or stolen items. Include a short description of each item, including its age, current value, make, model and serial number if you have it. Make a copy of the list, and give it to your adjuster.

4) Protect your property against further damage or theft, once it is safe to do so.

5) If your home is not fit to live in, make sure your agent and adjuster know where you can be found. Also remember to provide them with new contact information if you change locations.

Special Tips To Reduce Thefts While Fueling Your Vehicle At Gas Stations

Recently criminals have renewed an old ploy of stealing purses and other valuables from unsuspecting victims while the victims were at gas stations to fuel their vehicle.

Usually the thefts occur when the victim is distracted pumping gas or going into the establishment to pay for their purchase. Often victims leave their valuables such as purses, wallets, handbags, briefcases, etc., right in plain view with their automobile unlocked or the windows down making these items easy prey for Dirtbag Criminals who simply reach in, take what they want and are long gone before the victim even realizes what has happened.

Most crime is what I refer to as, "Crime of Opportunity" and this is a perfect example. Make it a solid habit of ALWAYS rolling up your windows and locking your vehicle even if you are only going to be away for a "Few Moments."

Also make sure to hide your valuables or place them in your vehicle's trunk to reduce the chance of this type of theft. Remember too that criminals often work in teams so make sure you are aware of your surroundings at all times and be suspicious of people who attempt to engage you in friendly conversation as this could just be a ploy to distract you while someone else robs you blind!

Tragic Rowhouse Fire In Washington, DC Provides A Grim Reminder On The Need For Family Fire Preparedness

Yesterday's tragic rowhouse fire in Northwest Washington, DC that resulted in the deaths of two people is another very important reminder of the dangers associated with residential fires and why you must be prepared and have a fire safety and emergency escape plan for you and all members of your family BEFORE disaster strikes.

Did you know that home fires are the single most common disaster throughout the United States?

According to the National Fire Protection Association, a home fire is reported in America every 79 seconds and someone dies from a home fire every 135 minutes. The U.S. Fire Administration reports in a typical year 20,000 people are injured in home fires.

Approximately 70 percent of home fire deaths occur from fires in residences with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. Cooking fires lead the pack as the major cause of home fires followed by heating fires.
